Conference highlights and thanks to the community!

Hey everyone,

The Write the Docs team is now emerging from the post-conference recovery period, and we wanted to send out a quick message to thank everyone for helping to make our conference such a success. We appreciate everyone who makes the conference possible: speakers, sponsors, organizers, and attendees alike.

Conference recap

At nearly 300 attendees, the conference was active and full of usual mix of talks on the main stage along with Q&A, lightning talks, unconference sessions, writing sprints, social event, and job fair. We thought everything went pretty smoothly this year, including experiments like the new social event platform.

As always, we were excited with how our awesome community come together in our virtual venue. Lots of knowledge was shared, and we had a great time.

Talk videos

Videos of the talks are now available on YouTube. This includes all conference talks and Q&A, as well as the lightning talks. You can also subscribe to our YouTube channel so you don’t miss any future content. We are also working to add the videos and sketchnotes for all the talks to our website archive, so stay tuned for updates.

As with any Write the Docs event, this conference was covered by our community Code of Conduct. We aim to be as transparent with CoC incidents and enforcement as we can.

To ensure that our CoC was visible and accessible, we took a number of specific steps:

Every participant agreed to the Code of Conduct in advance during registration.
The CoC, or a summary, was included on the conference website and Hopin Reception
The CoC was repeatedly mentioned in our conference introduction and announcements.
We specifically stressed that the CoC applies to all conference spaces including the social event.
We encouraged all attendees to report any incident, even if they were not sure whether it was a violation.

None of our organizers were approached about any CoC concerns at this event. We know that this is, in part, a reflection of the thoughtful and inclusive community that we’re so lucky to have.

That being said, we’re also very conscious of the fact that just because nothing was reported doesn’t mean nothing happened. If there was any personal conduct or other aspect of the conference experience that did not meet the expectations of behavior set out in the CoC, please email us at conduct@writethedocs.org.

As you probably know, we’ve decided to take a break this year from a full Australia & India conference, to help the organizers maintain their well-being and prevent burnout. Instead of the conference, we’re organizing a more casual super-meetup instead. Stay tuned for details soon!

The Write the Docs Australia and India team is now emerging from the post-conference recovery period, and we wanted to send out a quick message to thank everyone for helping to make our joint Australia and India online conference such a success. We’re happy to share some of the highlights with you.

Conference recap

At over 125 people, this year’s conference was our biggest yet! We had the usual mix of main stage and lightning talks, and social events. Learning from our Portland and Prague events, we were very happy with how well all of our events transitioned to our new online format. We loved how the spirit of the community was so palpable even in an online event, which was even more special given the year we’ve all had.

Overall, we were excited with how our awesome community came together in our new virtual venue. Lots of knowledge was shared, and we had a great time.

As we wrap up the Prague conference, we wanted to send out a quick email to thank everyone for helping to make our sixth European conference such a success. Whether you joined us in person or watched from afar, we thought you might like to get some of the highlights!

Conference recap

At nearly 300 people, this year’s conference was our biggest European event to date! We had the usual mix of main stage and lightning talks, unconference sessions, writing sprints, and social events.

We were also pleased with the continued success of our most recent experiments, including live-streaming the talks, running real-time captioning for the main stage, and hosting an in-person job fair. The overall feedback on all of these was positive, and we are excited to carry them forward to future events.

Overall, we were so excited to see another conference come together and see our awesome community gather under one roof.

Around 50 people attended from over 15 countries, a diverse and enthusiastic crowd. We had some excellent speakers, some new folks giving lightning talks, an active writing day, and a social.

Highlights and thanks from the Australian conference

We had our first Write the Docs Australia conference in Melbourne on 15-16 Nov. While we had the Write the Docs Day in 2017, this was our first proper conference that went for 2 days and was packed with presentations, workshops, lightning talks and unconference sessions. Here’s a quick recap of the 2 days.

Conference recap

At over 100 people, our first conference was a great start to what should now become a regular event on the Write the Docs conference calendar. We had a mix of main stage and lightning talks, unconference sessions, workshops and a social event. We received a lot of positive feedback on all of these and look forward to carry them to future events. We also had some interesting feedback on some things we might improve for next time.

The main stage presentations had a good blend of topics across documentation, user experience, customer support, content strategy, coding and style guides.
The unconference sessions and the lightning talks was well received and prompted people to think, collaborate and talk about documentation in a more unstructured way. It also allowed people to discuss topics that were not covered fully or partially throughout the conference.
We received a mixed response to the workshops and this can be an area we can look at improving next year.

Overall, we were so excited to see our first conference come together and see our awesome community gather under one roof.

Conference venue

What better place to hold a documentation conference than a library! We had 2 rooms overlooking the sensational Port Phillip Bay right at the top floor of a public library. When the audience was not soaking in the documentation goodness, they were more than happy to stretch their legs and have a stroll through the library amidst tons of books.

Food and Drinks

In the spirit of the community sharing nature of Write the Docs events, we decided to use social enterprises for our catering. Our food (check out the photos to see the amazing spread!) was catered for by Streat, who are tackling youth homelessness and disadvantage their way. When it came to beverages, we were ably supported by Wheelly Good Coffee, who have programs to improve the social and economic capabilities of some of Australia’s most high risk young people.

Audience feedback

We sent out a survey to our attendees and these are some of the initial reactions:

80% of attendees found the conference relevant and helpful to their jobs

As we are wrapping up the Prague conference, we wanted to send out a quick email to thank everyone for helping to make our fifth European conference such a success. Whether you joined us in person or watched from afar, we thought you might like to get some of the highlights!

Conference recap

At over 250 people, this year’s conference was our biggest European event to date! We had the usual mix of main stage and lightning talks, unconference sessions, writing sprints, and social events. We were also pleased with the success of some new experiments, including livestreaming the talks, running real-time captioning for the main stage, and hosting an in-person job fair. We received a lot of positive feedback on all of these and are excited to carry them forward to future events.

We also had some interesting feedback on some things we might improve for next time. The writing day, for example, picked up a lot of interest this year, and we’re now looking at providing more in-depth guidance on how to get the most out of the sessions.

Overall, we were so excited to see another conference come together and see our awesome community gather under one roof.

Videos of all the talks are now available in our video archive. Thanks to Here to Record for doing such a great job with these. If you gave a lightning talk, we’re working to get them on our site, but in the meantime you can see them on YouTube for now. (You can also subscribe to our YouTube channel so you don’t miss any future content!)

We also have photos from the event available on Flickr, thanks to our wonderful photographer Kay Smoljak! We really love the photos each year, and you’re welcome to use them for non-commercial purposes, as per our Creative Commons License.

Code of Conduct transparency report

As with any Write the Docs event, this conference was covered by our community Code of Conduct. We aim to be as transparent with CoC incidents and enforcement as we can.

To ensure that our CoC was visible and accessible, we took a number of specific steps:

Every participant agreed to the Code of Conduct in advance.
The CoC, or a summary, was included on the conference website, conference booklet, and in posters around the conference venue.
The CoC was repeatedly mentioned in announcements on the stage.
We specifically stressed that the CoC applies to all conference spaces including the social event, and therefore attendees should drink responsibly.
We encouraged all attendees to report any incident, even if they were not sure whether it was a violation.

None of our organizers were approached about any CoC concerns at this event. We know that this is, in part, a reflection of the thoughtful and inclusive community that we’re so lucky to have.
