A Few Things to Do Around the Venue

Write the Docs + Open Help Cincinnati is this weekend! We’re looking forward to seeing everybody Saturday morning. For those arriving early Friday, we’ve put together a list of things to do in Cincinnati near the venue. All of these places are easy to reach on the streetcar.

Ohio Riverfront

From Smale Riverfront Park to International Friendship Park, two miles of the Cincinnati riverfront are parks and public spaces. Climb into the flying pig at Smale Park, and cross the Ohio River on the Roebling Bridge or the Purple People Bridge.

Cincinnati Reds

For baseball fans, catch a Reds game at the Great American Ballpark on the banks of the Ohio River. Arrive early to visit the Reds Hall of Fame & Museum.

Parks and Music

Visit Fountain Square in the heart of downtown, or head closer to the venue for Washington Park and a view of the historic Music Hall. Both Fountain Square and Washington Park have free live music Friday evening.

Museums

Museum fans can check out the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the Taft Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Center, and the Cincinnati Fire Museum.

A short bus ride away is the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, the architectural inspiration for the Hall of Justice. Unfortunately, it is currently undergoing renovations, so most exhibits are closed.

Findlay Market

Foodies should plan a visit to Findlay Market, the oldest continually operating public market in Ohio.

Games and Drinks

If you’d rather sit inside and have some fun, check out 16-Bit Bar+Arcade, a bar with arcade games, or The Rook OTR, a bar with board games. Both 16-Bit and The Rook are a short walk from the conference venue.

Updates on the Unconference and Underground Tour

Write the Docs + Open Help Cincinnati is less than a month away, and we’ve got some exciting updates for you. But first, if you haven’t already, check out our great speaker lineup, and buy your tickets today.

Unconference Topics

Our Cincinnati conference has a whole day dedicated to unconference sessions. The sessions will be capped off with reports. That way, everybody can learn from all the sessions even if they can’t attend them all.

Our unconference agenda is set by you! You will have a chance to suggest and vote on sessions throughout the day of talks on Saturday. To help us and your fellow conference-goers, list your topics on our web site today.

Underground Tour

We’ve arranged a private Cincinnati Underground Tour after the unconference sessions close on Sunday. This unique walking tour gives some history on Cincinnati’s Over the Rhine neighborhood and takes you underground into 19th-century crypts and brewing tunnels. Our private tour will even include information on our venue, Union Hall, which is no longer a part of the public tour.

This is a separately ticketed event and costs $30 per person. Because of the logistics of running such a tour, we need to have a headcount early. Register soon!

The Write the Docs Cincinnati + Open Help conference is now a little over two months away, so we hope you’re getting excited for another inimitable Write the Docs experience in beautiful, historic Cincinnati!

Tickets are still available. Our thanks to everyone who has already purchased theirs!

Submit your talk by Monday

Although the deadline is fast approaching, there are still 5 days (including 1 weekend!) left to submit a talk proposal for Write the Docs Cincinnati + Open Help! We’ll be accepting proposals until Monday, June 18 at Midnight PST.

If you’re interested in pitching a talk, but you need some ideas or guidance, check out our Call for Proposals page. If you’ve got an idea, but you’re having a hard time getting your proposal to come together, you can always ask for feedback on Slack. Your fellow documentarians are there to help!

We can’t wait to see your submissions! We’ll be reviewing all the talk proposals later this month, and announcing the full conference schedule in mid-July.

A schedule overview

This event is a bit different than the other Write the Docs events we’ve done in the past. It has a much longer portion devoted to sprints, with one full day devoted to both talks and unconferences. Here’s a quick overview of the schedule:

Saturday Aug 18: Talks on all things technical documentation. We’ll have a variety of speakers on the stage sharing their experience and knowledge.
Sunday Aug 19: Unconference discussion and open space. Share ideas and discuss problems with others from the documentation community. Anyone can suggest and lead a session on any topic.
Monday-Wednesday Aug 20-22: Documentation sprints and writing days. Get together with other documentarians to work on your docs and learn some new skills. Don’t have a team to bring to the sprints? Join us anyway–get involved with an open source project and learn from the people who are pioneering documentation sprints.

You are welcome to attend for as many days as you wish. Don’t feel like you must come for everything if you don’t have time, but do try and come for all that you can.

Announcing Write the Docs + Open Help Cincinnati

Welcome to the official launch of Write the Docs + Open Help Cincinnati 2018! We are excited to announce the first-ever collaboration between Write the Docs and Open Help, coming August 18-22, 2018.

Since 2011, the Open Help Conference in Cincinnati featured attendee-led discussions and sprints for a wide range of people working on open-source and community-based projects. This year, Write the Docs and Open Help are coming together to bring 5 days of talks, conversations, and doc sprints a little closer to home for our East Coast and Midwestern documentarians!

Write the Docs + Open Help Cincinnati 2018 creates a time and place for the community of documentarians to learn, discuss, and do, working together to improve the art and science of documentation.

Here’s a quick overview of the schedule:

Day 1: Talks on all things technical documentation. We’ll have a variety of speakers on the stage sharing their experience and knowledge.
Day 2: Unconference discussion and open space. Share ideas and discuss problems with others from the documentation community. Anyone can suggest and lead a session on any topic.

Speaking at Write the Docs is a fantastic way to share your ideas with our inspiring community of documentarians. If there is something you’d really like to see a talk on, submit a proposal on it, or refer someone else!
